Proyecto CARE: Development of an automatic control system for radon concentration in buildings.

The objective of this project is to give a comprehensive response to the needs of control of the radon concentration in buildings. The project will help reduce the incidence of lung cancer by guaranteeing indoor radon gas concentration levels below the performance values established by organizations such as the World Health Organization.

The project is part of the Challenges-Collaboration of the State Program for Research, Development and Innovation Oriented to the Challenges of the Society, within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013-2016.

Improve assistance and aging through a smart home with infrared sensors

The general objective of the project is to create a care home for the elderly that acts in a non-intrusive way. The Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence technologies will be applied to create an innovative product that offers new services capable of solving the most common needs of older people living alone and their caregivers, both in terms of safety, comfort, care and well-being . This product will be designed together with the end users, both elderly and caregivers, to ensure its acceptability, validate its functionality and measure its impact. As a result, a new product will be obtained for exploitation in the elderly market (silver market).

Rol de S&C: Coordination, definition of requirements of the care home, automatic recognition of activities, detection of anomalies, development of the alert system, integration of infrared sensors in the IoT solution, pilot in real environment, dissemination and exploitation.

Project description: NEST will design and implement a unique novel standoff system with the capability to detect multiple threats amongst which CBRN threats and the potential to include detection of pandemic viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2. As the day-to-day protection of commercial and transport facilities is the responsibility of their owners and operators, in close cooperation with local law enforcement, NEST will support owners, operators, and security staff by providing (i) threat indications and warnings, and (ii) guidance for facility security by developing appropriate information-sharing and analysis mechanisms.

Project description: The aim of the project is to create a product based on gas detectors for elderly people, allowing them to be safe alone at home. Gas detectors allow you to monitor activities of daily living within the home, as well as identify dangerous situations. Gas detectors reduce the technical limitations that other sensors have for continuous activity monitoring. In addition, it controls the privacy of users, thus increasing the level of acceptance of this technology.

Project Name: Sistema de ventilación inteligente y detección del nivel de higienización de interiores (Smart ventilation system and detection of the level of indoor sanitation)

Project Description: Development of a tool capable of measuring indoor and outdoor air quality to alert how and how long to ventilate in order to avoid contagion indoors. The indoor air quality will take into account all those factors that influence the permanence of the virus in the air, as well as the quality of the outdoor air in order to act on other ventilation mechanisms when the outdoor air quality is not adequate. In addition, it will alert of the level of disinfection of the room by detecting certain chemical compounds typical of cleaning products.

Project name: New generation of IoT sensors for the detection of hydrogen leaks in chemical industries based on MEMS technologies and Neural Networks (New generation hydrogen IoT sensors for leak detection in chemical industries based on MEMS and Neural Network technologies)

Project Description: H2SENSE aims to develop the next generation of reliable Hydrogen (H2) gas sensors for the industry that are affordable to be a deployed permanently in chemical industrial plants and H2 production/storage sites to detect potential leaks and localize them before they can result in an accident. S&C will work in collaboration with two partners from Germany in this project namely, Union Instruments GmbH and Technical University Dortmund.

AI4GRID

Project Name: AI for Demand forecasting in commercial and public buildings in a smart grid context

Project Description: AI4Grid is a smart demand forecasting tool for electricity utilities and aggregators. It uses an AI model to accurately forecast electricity demand in individual buildings and building clusters with a focus on small and medium commercial establishments and public buildings in a city with a target to reduce total electricity consumption by up to 10% on average.

S&C Role: In this project, we will focus on energy forecasting methods based on causal methods where the cause-and-effect relation is considered and analyzed. Multivariate modeling is adopted, where energy consumption time series is related to other influencing variables, such as socio-economic and climate factors.
